A drug plan comparison is more useful when it uses your exact prescriptions and the pharmacies you expect to use.
Where Part D fits
Part D is Medicare prescription drug coverage. You can usually get it through a stand-alone Medicare drug plan with Original Medicare or through a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
Bring the details that change the comparison
- Medication name, strength and dosage form.
- How often you take each medication.
- The quantity you fill and the days covered by each refill.
- Preferred pharmacies, including any mail-order preference.
- Any coverage notices from your current employer or insurer.
Check coverage, not just premiums
Ask about the plan’s drug list, cost-sharing, pharmacy network and restrictions such as prior authorization. Keep notices showing whether existing drug coverage is creditable. A gap of 63 days or more without Medicare drug coverage or other creditable drug coverage can lead to a Part D late enrollment penalty.
