These are different approaches to coverage. Compare how each would work for your life rather than choosing from a headline premium.
Two approaches, different questions
| What to compare | Medicare Advantage | Original Medicare + Medigap |
|---|---|---|
| How coverage works | Private plan provides Part A and Part B benefits. | Original Medicare pays first; Medigap helps with specified remaining costs. |
| Prescription coverage | Included in most plans; verify the plan. | Usually consider a separate Part D plan. |
| Doctors and travel | Check the plan's network and out-of-area rules. | Check whether providers accept Medicare; confirm the policy's terms. |
| Changing later | Enrollment periods and plan rules matter. | Confirm Medigap enrollment protections and underwriting before switching. |
Build your own comparison
- Which option works with the providers I want?
- What would I pay in a year with frequent care?
- What happens when I travel?
- How would my prescriptions be covered?
- What enrollment rights would I have if my needs change?
Give each decision its own space
Review medical coverage, prescription coverage and enrollment timing together. Do not assume that choosing Medicare Advantage now guarantees you can buy any Supplement later without underwriting.
