Continuing to work does not automatically mean you should delay Medicare. Start by confirming how your specific employer plan coordinates benefits.
Confirm what coverage you actually have
Coverage through your or your spouse’s current employment may give you an opportunity to delay Part B and use a Special Enrollment Period later. Ask your benefits administrator whether your coverage qualifies and whether Medicare is expected to pay first.
Understand the transition window
The employment-based Part B Special Enrollment Period generally lasts eight months after employment or the group coverage ends, whichever occurs first. That does not mean you should wait eight months: you may need coverage sooner to avoid a gap. COBRA does not restart this clock.
Before choosing a retirement date
- Request written confirmation of your group coverage end date.
- Ask about prescription drug coverage and retain creditable-coverage notices.
- If you contribute to an HSA, ask how Medicare enrollment affects contributions.
- Map out your Medicare and supplemental coverage start dates.
